A few of the characters I've sculpted in VR with Adobe Medium, 3D printed, and hand-painted (Hobby)
I don’t consider myself an artist (at least in the visual sense), but I love sculpting in virtual reality without the limitations of gravity, and turning my creations into real-life physical objects. Right now, my more technical hobbies still tend to take up more of my time though.
Most recently was Pefourel, my most complex sculpture so far. Pefourel is a two-part sculpture, where the panda and tree are two separate pieces that detach from each other. I first created the panda in Adobe Medium, and then created the tree, intentionally modeling it so that Pefourel would slide in securely to the area designed for him to sit.
As with most of my characters, I add color to my digital models to give me an idea of what I’m wanting to create, even though I need to later hand-paint my 3D-printed single-color plastic models, usually with acrylic.
My printer is an Ender 3 v2, and I use PrusaSlicer for slicing. When slicing the panda, I chose to use 75% infill to give him a decent heft when holding him, along with a 0.12mm layer height. For the tree, I used PrusaSlicer’s adaptive layer height feature to speed up printing of the rectangular prism base, and give detail to the tree.
I also tried using my Looking Glass display to visualize my colored model in 3D while painting it. It was somewhat helpful, but it’s hard to say if it was worth the hassle of setting up. I later just went back to using Blender on a plain old flat screen.
On a whim I decided to sculpt Mike Wazowski from Monsters Inc., and gave him the remarkably creative name Wazo. I am pretty happy how it came out though. The spoons were not my idea, for the record.
Cavity started when I was doodling with random shapes on a mirror in Medium, and eventually decided to add a face. I never got around to painting the physical version, and maybe that’s for the better.
